International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) matches are the internationally sanctioned matches of the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.
These matches revolve around the search for ultimate precision and perfect accuracy, requiring intense concentration and physical control.

Air pistol events
The 10 metre Air Pistol event is run in an airconditioned, purpose-built facility.
Aside from being a challenging and enjoyable match, it is an excellent training tool for identifying technical faults and rectifying them for other DPC matches.
It is a slow-fire match, demanding similar levels of precision to Free Pistol, except that it is shot at 10 metres on a 170mm x 170mm target with a 12mm ten-ring.
The match consists of 60 shots.

Standard pistol events
The Standard Pistol match is shot in timed series of five shots on turning targets from 25 metres, using .22 Long Rifle semi-autos at standard Precision targets with a 50mm ten-ring.
The match totals 60 shots:
- 4 series, each of 150 seconds
- 4 series, each of 20 seconds
- 4 series, each of 10 seconds.
A series starts with the shooters arm extended at 45 degrees to the horizontal.
Handguns in the event must have barrels no longer than 150mm and triggers no lighter than 1,000gm.
Centrefire pistol events
The match consists of two separate 30 shot stages of fire:
- One is a “precision stage”, shot at 25 metres on a precision target (50 mm 10 ring) with 5 minutes allowed for each 5 shot series.
- The other is a “rapid-fire stage”, again shot at 25 metres but on turning targets. One shot is fired with each exposure of the target as it turns to face the shooter for 3 seconds and then away for 7 seconds, with the shooter lowering his arm to 45 degrees between each exposure.
Rapid fire events
In the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol events, competitors use .22 (5.6mm) semi-automatic pistols at all levels of competition, up to and including the Olympics.
A series (string) consists of five shots fired, one on each of five targets within a limited time.
The targets are side by side at 25m away from the shooter. When the targets turn and appear, the competitor raises their arm up from a 45 degree angle and fires five shots. If a shot is late, it will score as a miss whether it hits a target or not.
